SQUINT AND LAZY EYE: WHAT THEY ARE
A squint (strabismus) is when the two eyes do not point in the same direction. One eye may turn in, out, up or down, all the time or only sometimes.
A lazy eye (amblyopia) is reduced vision in one eye because the brain has learned to favour the other eye. It can be caused by a squint, by a large difference in glasses power between the eyes, or by something blocking vision in early childhood.
Both are best treated early. The visual system develops in childhood, and treatment usually works better the younger the child is when it starts.
SIGNS TO WATCH FOR IN CHILDREN
• An eye that turns or wanders, especially when tired
• Tilting or turning the head to look at things
• Closing or covering one eye
• Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close
• Frequent eye rubbing, headaches or poor attention at school
WHAT A CHILDREN'S EYE CHECK COVERS
Vision testing suited to the child's age, a check of eye alignment and movement, a glasses power check with dilating drops where needed, and an examination of the front and back of the eye.
TREATMENT AT THE CENTRE
• Glasses: often the first step, and sometimes enough on their own.
• Patching (occlusion): covering the stronger eye for part of the day so the weaker eye is used more.
• Eye exercises: for certain types of squint and focusing problems.
• Squint surgery: adjusting the eye muscles to improve alignment, when glasses and other measures are not enough.
All treatment, including squint surgery, is done at Dr Smriti Eye Centre. Squint in adults can also be assessed and treated.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Will my child grow out of a squint? A true squint does not go away on its own. Please get it checked.
