WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Myopia (short-sight) means distant objects look blurred. Children with myopia wear minus-power glasses. It usually starts in school years and tends to increase until the late teens.

Myopia is becoming more common in children, and more time on near work and screens with less time outdoors is thought to contribute. Higher myopia in adult life is linked to a higher risk of eye problems later, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and damage to the central retina.

WHAT MYOPIA CONTROL DOES, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT

Myopia control aims to slow down the increase in glasses power during childhood. It does not reverse existing myopia, and results vary from child to child. Treatment usually continues for several years, with regular reviews.

OPTIONS AT DR SMRITI EYE CENTRE

• Low-dose atropine eye drops: one drop at bedtime, every day.

• Myopia-control spectacle lenses: special glasses lenses designed to slow progression, worn all day.

• Orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses: specially fitted contact lenses worn overnight and removed in the morning.

The choice depends on your child's age, glasses power, how fast it is increasing and what suits the family. Options can sometimes be combined.

HOW PROGRESS IS MONITORED

• Glasses power checked with dilating drops

• Axial length: the length of the eye, measured with a non-contact instrument. It is a more precise way to see whether myopia is progressing.

Reviews are usually every 6 months.

EVERYDAY HABITS THAT HELP

• At least 1 to 2 hours outdoors in daylight each day

• Breaks from near work and screens: every 20 minutes, look at something far away for 20 seconds

• Keeping books and screens at a comfortable distance

COMMON QUESTIONS

Is my child too young for myopia control? It can be considered once myopia is found and is increasing. Dr Jain advises based on your child's measurements.

Can myopia be cured with eye exercises? No. Exercises do not reverse myopia.
