CHALAZION (EYELID LUMP)
A chalazion is a painless lump in the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland. Many settle with warm compresses and lid hygiene. If a chalazion persists or affects vision, it can be removed by incision and curettage: a small cut on the inner side of the lid, through which the contents are cleared. No visible scar is left on the skin side.
PTERYGIUM (GROWTH ON THE WHITE OF THE EYE)
A pterygium is a fleshy growth that spreads from the white of the eye onto the cornea. It is more common in people who spend a lot of time outdoors in sun and dust. If it causes irritation or redness, affects vision or keeps growing, it can be removed. Removal with a conjunctival graft, where healthy tissue from the same eye covers the area, lowers the chance of it growing back.
WATERING EYE (LACRIMAL SYRINGING)
A constantly watering eye can be caused by a blocked tear duct. Lacrimal syringing flushes saline through the tear drainage system to check whether it is open. It helps decide the next step in treatment.
FOREIGN BODY IN THE EYE
Dust, metal or other particles stuck on the eye are removed under a microscope after numbing drops. If something has hit your eye at speed, such as metal from grinding or hammering, see an eye doctor the same day. Do not rub the eye.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Will I need stitches? Some procedures need fine stitches, which are explained beforehand.
