WHY THE RETINA MATTERS

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Many retinal conditions cause no symptoms until vision is already affected, so regular checks matter, especially for people with diabetes.

CONDITIONS WE CHECK AND TREAT

• Diabetic retinopathy: damage to the retina's blood vessels from diabetes.

• Diabetic macular oedema: swelling of the central retina, which blurs reading vision.

• Age-related macular degeneration: changes in the central retina with age.

• Retinal vein occlusion: a blocked vein in the retina, often linked to high blood pressure.

IF YOU HAVE DIABETES

Have a dilated retina check at least once a year, even if your vision seems normal. Pregnancy and poorly controlled sugar or blood pressure may need more frequent checks.

TESTS AT THE CENTRE

• Dilated retina examination: the whole retina, after drops widen the pupil

• Fundus photography: a photograph of the retina, used to compare changes over time

• OCT (optical coherence tomography): a cross-section scan of the central retina, to detect swelling

TREATMENT AT THE CENTRE

• Retinal laser: to treat leaking or abnormal blood vessels.

• Intravitreal injections: medicine injected into the eye to reduce swelling and abnormal vessel growth, usually given as a course.

Good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol remains central to protecting the retina.

WARNING SIGNS: SEE AN EYE DOCTOR THE SAME DAY

• A sudden shower of new floaters or flashes of light

• A dark curtain or shadow moving across your vision

• Sudden loss or distortion of vision

Cashless treatment is available with CGHS and with Star Health, ICICI Lombard, Care, SBI General, Tata AIG, Universal Sompo, Bajaj Allianz, Future Generali, Medi Assist, Raksha TPA and FHPL. Call to check your policy before your visit.
