WHAT IS A CATARACT?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. It is most common with age, and can also develop earlier with diabetes, long-term steroid use or an eye injury. Common signs are blurred or dim vision, glare from headlights, faded colours and frequent changes in glasses power.
No eye drop or medicine removes a cataract. Surgery is considered when the cataract starts to affect daily activities such as reading, driving or recognising faces.
CATARACT SURGERY AT DR SMRITI EYE CENTRE
Surgery is performed by Dr Smriti Jain at the centre using two techniques:
• Phacoemulsification (phaco): the cloudy lens is broken up with ultrasound through a small opening and removed.
• Micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS): a similar procedure through an even smaller opening.
A foldable artificial lens (intraocular lens, IOL) is placed in the eye. Surgery is done under local anaesthesia as a day-care procedure, so most patients go home the same day.
LENS OPTIONS
• Monofocal: clear vision at one distance, usually far. Reading glasses are typically needed.
• Toric: also corrects astigmatism (uneven curvature of the eye).
• Multifocal: aims to reduce dependence on glasses for far and near.
• Extended depth of focus (EDOF): clear far and intermediate vision, such as computer distance. Glasses may be needed for fine print.
The right lens depends on your eye measurements, any other eye conditions and how you use your eyes every day. Dr Jain explains the options, their limits and their costs before you decide.
BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
• Before: a full eye examination and measurements of the eye to calculate the lens power, with blood sugar and blood pressure checks where needed.
• After: eye drops for a few weeks, follow-up visits, and no rubbing the eye or getting water in it for the advised period. Most people return to light activities within a few days.
RISKS
As with any surgery, there are risks. These include infection, inflammation, raised eye pressure and, rarely, retinal detachment. Some people develop clouding behind the new lens months or years later (posterior capsule opacification), which is treated with a short YAG laser procedure. Your individual risks are discussed at consultation.
CASHLESS TREATMENT
Cashless surgery is available with CGHS and with Star Health, ICICI Lombard, Care, SBI General, Tata AIG, Universal Sompo, Bajaj Allianz, Future Generali, Medi Assist, Raksha TPA and FHPL. Call to check your policy before your visit.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Will I feel pain? The eye is numbed with drops or a local injection. Most people feel some pressure. Dr Jain explains what to expect beforehand.
Do I need to stay overnight? Usually not. It is a day-care procedure.
Will I still need glasses? That depends on the lens chosen. Many people with a monofocal lens still use reading glasses.
