WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?
Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve, the nerve that carries vision from the eye to the brain. It is often linked to raised pressure inside the eye. Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, which is why early detection matters.
The most common type has no symptoms in the early stages. A less common type, angle-closure glaucoma, can cause sudden eye pain, redness, blurred vision, headache, nausea and coloured halos around lights. This is an emergency: please see an eye doctor the same day.
WHO SHOULD BE CHECKED
• Everyone over 40, as part of a routine eye examination
• People with a family history of glaucoma
• People with diabetes, high myopia (high minus glasses power) or a past eye injury
• People who use steroid medicines for a long time
TESTS AVAILABLE AT THE CENTRE
• Tonometry: pressure inside the eye
• Pachymetry: thickness of the cornea, which affects pressure readings
• Gonioscopy: whether the drainage angle of the eye is open or narrow
• OCT (optical coherence tomography): thickness of the optic nerve fibre layer
• Visual field test (perimetry): side vision, where glaucoma damage usually starts
TREATMENT AT THE CENTRE
The aim of treatment is to lower eye pressure and prevent further damage. All of the following are done at Dr Smriti Eye Centre:
• Eye drops: the usual first step, used every day.
• YAG laser peripheral iridotomy: a small opening made in the iris for narrow or closed drainage angles.
• Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT): a laser that improves drainage in open-angle glaucoma.
• Trabeculectomy: surgery that creates a new drainage path when drops and laser are not enough.
Glaucoma needs lifelong follow-up.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Can glaucoma be cured? No, but it can usually be controlled so that further vision loss is slowed or prevented.
Will I need drops for life? Often yes. Laser or surgery may reduce the number of drops needed.
How often do I need check-ups? Usually every 3 to 6 months, depending on your eyes.
